ABSTRACT:
A variety of active pharmaceutical ingredients can be administered transdermally using microneedles, which are tiny instruments that cause minimal discomfort. Over the past decade, microneedles have been fabricated using various additive manufacturing technologies; however, these methods are often costly, time-consuming, and limited in terms of material compatibility and bioavailability. Additionally, 3D printing shows great promise in the development of complex transdermal drug delivery systems and medical devices by integrating microneedles (MNs) with other advanced technologies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also provides guidelines to ensure the safe use of microneedle devices. This review also lists the difficulties presented by 3D printing technologies. These difficulties include the cost of manufacturing, which restricts its feasibility for large-scale production, the incompatibility of materials based on microneedles with human cells, and issues with the effective administration of high dosages of loaded microneedles.
